In my heart I know I would prefer gratitude, but there are days when I know I am approaching the performance like a job, and I inadvertently miss that part. I am looking to focus more on my gratitudes and sharing that experience rather than it feeling like a job.
This is such an excellent article. I haven't done the exercise yet, but this gratitude versus praise thing is tricky for me. I know how important gratitude is in life, but isn't praise sometimes an expression of gratitude? Receiving praise for a good performance can make me feel like I've reached someone. I might be missing something here. Am I a bad person?
Wayne, you are by far not a bad person. And, thank you for saying what probably many have thought. Individually, we have different needs, some need praise or gratitude at different levels. As we go through life those needs evolve and shift. One way to look at the purpose of the question is that you might have different personal goals for what you do in music and how you do music based on your personal needs. There is not a right or wrong answer, but rather matching your goals to your needs when designing music performances and managing anxiety. In my private coaching I have worked with musicians who say they want one but really they operate on the other. Working on understanding the difference can heighten performance effect.
